How to Choose the Right Surveillance Camera for your Store
Are you looking to equip your store with video surveillance cameras? The market is filled with options, including WiFi cameras, wired cameras, IP cameras, and PTZ motorized dome cameras. Here are some tips to help you choose the best cameras to protect your business!
Rules to Follow for Video Surveillance
Apply for Authorization
Before installing surveillance cameras, you need to get an installation permit. You'll need to submit an application to the local government responsible for your area. This application will be reviewed by the video-protection commission, which will make a decision within three months. The authorization is valid for five years, after which you’ll need to reapply.
Respecting Privacy
Once you have the go-ahead, it’s crucial to respect the privacy of both your employees and customers. Employees shouldn't be filmed at their workstations, except in specific situations like when operating the cash register. Cameras should never be placed in fitting rooms, restrooms, or break areas. Also, make sure to clearly notify everyone of the presence of cameras in all monitored areas.
Designate a Responsible Person
Determine who will be in charge of viewing the footage and maintaining the system. Usually, only the manager and designated staff should have access to the videos. If your system supports remote access, make sure all images are securely protected.
Retention of Images
Always remember, surveillance footage should not be kept for more than 30 days unless there is a justified reason to extend this period. Document all decisions regarding image retention in a register maintained by the employer.
Types of Surveillance Cameras
There are various video surveillance technologies to choose from, depending on your budget and business needs. Let's check out some that might work for your business.
HDVCI Cameras
HDVCI (High Definition Composite Video Interface) technology strikes a balance between analog and high definition. It offers excellent image quality at a reasonable cost, making it a good value. HDVCI cameras can transmit multiple signals, including audio, video, data, and power, and are commonly used in stores.
Wireless IP Cameras
IP (Internet Protocol) cameras are a great fit for stores due to their superior image quality. Recorded images are sent over the Internet and can be viewed in real-time on smartphones, tablets, or computers. IP cameras can be wired or wireless; the latter requires a strong Internet connection and a router with a firewall. Wireless IP cameras are easier to install, and some models are battery-powered for complete autonomy.
Wired IP Cameras
Though more challenging to install, wired IP cameras offer benefits like better signal reception through thick walls and metal structures. They provide high resolution and reliable performance. However, installing a wired system requires planning for the necessary cabling work in your store.
Both wired and wireless IP cameras can be used indoors and outdoors, with night vision capabilities available if needed.
Panoramic Cameras
If you want to avoid blind spots, consider panoramic cameras. These motorized cameras offer a 180° to 360° field of vision, allowing you to monitor large areas of your store. Panoramic cameras can be controlled via WiFi or dedicated software and can include motion detection systems.
PTZ Motorized Dome Cameras
PTZ (Pan Tilt Zoom) dome cameras are a type of panoramic camera with adjustable fields of view using a motorized lens with a powerful zoom. They can record images from up to 500 meters away and also work in night vision mode.
